BEE A MENTOR x CHICKS WITH CLASS STEM GLAM CAMP

Lets Talk about STEM. First of all, your probably wondering what does STEM consist of? STEM is made up of Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics completing the acronym STEM. According to statistics only 15% of young women take an interest in STEM career opportunities after high school, and 4% seek an interest during their high school career. This is alarming and definitely something to talk about considering the future is female, and the future jobs will require STEM. Yes! Future jobs will require STEM, and the percentage for that is 80%.
So I started to think about how I became interested in Science at an early age? I remember my mom taking me to stores like Zany Brainy, and signing me up for summer camps that offered STEM programing, and watching shows like Bill Nye the Science Guy. Then it dawned on me... There were no places like Zany Brainy, there were very few STEM camps being supported or advertised in the minority community. I mean they don't care about the standards and cost of public education so why would them put funds into STEM?
Thats when I came up with a genius idea to start my own workshops and camps for young women and expose them to STEM. The only problem was I needed to find a venue that would support my mission, idea, and host. Let me tell you about the power of networking! Shout out to my Soror (oo-oop) Alena Conley who made me realize networking across is not always the solution, but attempting to utilize those left and right connections first.
So, taking that advice I reached out to my bestie Jazmine Henley-Brown and pitched her the idea, within 2.2 seconds of her telling me it was genius, she slid me a DM connecting me to Margo Baines, who is the owner and founder of Chicks with Class and Classic Boys in Houston, Texas. This was a heaven sent connection because we both had similar interests and hit the ground running with ideas.
This summer in partnership, we will host our first STEM GLAMP. This camp will offer young women ages 6-14 the opportunity to learn STEM through the formulation of cosmetics. Each camper will learn how to identify scientific elements and instruments used, learn the basics of entrepreneurship and marketing.
Yes, we travel! If this is something you are interested in hosting in your city, you can contact email@example.com for more information.
